Away Record Ends

Cambridge United’s good run of away form ended on Saturday with a 4-0 defeat at Scunthorpe. This bad news for United was compounded by an injury to striker Dave Kitson who pulled a hamstring, which may put him out for four to six weeks. Cambridge strikers Dan Chillingworth, John Turner and Alex Revell are also out with long term injuries so the immediate future looks difficult for United.

Bridge The Gap
Supporters group Cambridge Fans United, who are trying to raise £100,000 before Christmas, have announced their latest fund raising scheme “Sponsor a Seat”. Supporters are invited to sponsor a seat in the ground from £10. The idea is based on the success of similar schemes at Lincoln, Bury and York. Further information on fundraising is available on www.helpcfu.co.uk. So far CFU have raised £10,000 towards their Christmas target.

Next At The Abbey

On Saturday United are at home to Leyton Orient. This is the nearest to a local derby this season for both The O’s and The U’s, so expect a good away crowd to boost the Abbey atmosphere. Orient are struggling just below The U’s in the league table. Tickets will be available at the ground on the day.

John Taylor’s Big Night

Last weeks testimonial for manager John Taylor, against Leeds United, attracted nearly 6,000 supporters. The first half was seriously contested by both teams and ended with Leeds winning 1-0. The second half included United’s players from the past and was not so serious but Leeds won 5-3 despite a John Taylor goal. Thanks must be given to Leeds United who took a full first team squad, the Leeds fans present saw Mark Viduka first game in a Leeds shirt for some time.

Cambridge U’s 1 Oxford U’s 1

Saturday saw a visit from high flying Oxford United. Just 1 point off the top of the table the visitors had made a good start to the season. Cambridge looked like winners until the second minute of extra time when Oxford scored an equaliser, but this was still one of the best performances of the season at The Abbey.

CFU Fundraising Push

Supporters trust Cambridge Fans United are aiming to raise £100,000 in 5 weeks to help pay off the £500,000 loan due on December 22nd. The redevelopment announced recently should help bring long term financial stability to the club but the loan still has to be repayed and playing costs still need to be covered for the next 18 months. More information on fundraising plans in next week’s Abbey Days.

U’s Through To FA Cup 2nd Round

Yet another away win for United, this time against Lancaster City, in the FA Cup, has put The U’s into a second round tie at Macclesfield. A winner by Luke Gutteridge just 15 seconds from the end of the match was enough to give Cambridge the away win. With our poor home record this season most fans are probably grateful for being drawn away in the first two cup rounds.

Dave Kitson In Team of the Week

Leading scorer Dave Kitson has been named in the division three team of the week. Kitson earned the honour after returning from a three match ban to score four goals in three games, including the opener in last Saturday’s win against Lancaster. Dave’s tally so far this season is 11 goals.

Wanless Returns To The Abbey

On Saturday United are at home to Oxford United. This match will see the return of former skipper Paul Wanless. Contrary to normal practice we expect Paul to receive a good reception from fans who appreciated his commitment while in a Cambridge shirt. Oxford are currently lying third in the table while Cambridge are fourteenth.

Away Form Continues

United continue to perform well on their travels. Last week the team travelled to Kidderminster and drew 2 –2 with goals from Dave Kitson and the newly signed loanee Gareth Williams. Williams, who has signed for a month’s loan was playing his first game for The U’s, the Crystal Palace striker has been brought in by manager John Taylor to cover for the injury problems among United’s forwards.

Testimonial, United v. Leeds

On Tuesday 11th Cambridge United will be visited by Leeds United for John Taylor’s testimonial game. The first half will be a competitive game with the Cambridge first team playing the Leeds first team. The second half will put the emphasis on fun with the return of many former United players. Kick off is at 7.45pm and tickets are on sale now. Prices are £12 standing, £15 seated, and £5 for concessions anywhere in the ground.

Another Away Win

After struggling to achieve points at home United once again went away and put in another great performance to win 2-0 at Bristol rovers. Shane Tudor returned to form to pick up Man of the Match but yet again young John Turner put in a good performance and scored the first goal. A mention must be made of manager John Taylor who played his second game in four days at 39 years old and once again inspired the team. Shaggy will probably be pleased to see Dave Kitson return from suspension for the next game, on the other hand maybe he is starting to enjoy the player manager role.

Testimonial

John Taylor’s testimonial match date will take place against Leeds United on either Tuesday 11th or Wednesday 12th of November. Peter Reid will take his full first team squad to The Abbey Stadium as there is a Premiership break due to the Euro 2004 play offs. Further date and ticket details will be given in a forthcoming Abbey Days.

Next At The Abbey

On Saturday united are at home to Yeovil Town. Yeovil are managed by former U’s boss Gary Johnson whose claim to fame is persuading the Cambridge United board not to let Dion Dublin leave United on a free transfer, United eventually received £1 million pounds for Dion, so maybe we should not give him too much of a hard time.

Family Day Success

The first Cambridge United Family Day of the season drew a large crowd, it was especially pleasing to see so many from Haverhill attending. Over 5,100 attended the game. For the first time, the new South Stand was sold out. The early part of the game was disappointing for the United fans as a poor Bury side took a 2 – 0 lead. It was only when manager John Taylor joined the game with around half an hour to go that the match livened up. Unfortunately the U's missed too many of their chances and despite dominating possession, did not gain any points. Andy Duncan scored what was little more than a consolation goal for the United fans. The final part of the game saw the crowd getting behind the team and at last there was some excitement at The Abbey, which will hopefully bring back some of the new United fans.
The Chairman Speaks
Club Chairman Gary Harwood has said that over the next six weeks the future of the club will be decided. Harwood was optimistic about raising the necessary finances needed to ensure the future of the club. The Chairman hoped to announce a deal within the first couple of weeks of November that would stabilise the long-term future of the Cambridge United. The U’s need up to £800,000 to pay off debt and see them through to the end of the season.
