U’s Triumph in Local Derby

Cambridge travelled to Sixfields Stadium on Friday night to take on local rivals Northampton Town. Despite Luke Guttridge missing a penalty, he managed to score another before Adam Tann got the winner in the 88th minute. United ran out 2-1 winners in the end.

CFU Raise £100,000

Anyone following United could not have missed the news coverage given lately that the U’s have to raise £100,000 to pay off a bank loan by December 22nd. At time of going to press Cambridge Fans United have raised nearly the required amount to save the club. Chairman Gary Harwood announced on Sunday night that the loan would be repaid on Monday, and the club is safe for another year at least. The redevelopment of the ground with a hotel and fitness club should guarantee the long-term future of Cambridge United.

United out of FA Cup.

Cambridge’s FA Cup run came to an end last week at the hands of Macclesfield town. United held the Silkmen to a draw at Moss Rose last Saturday, but went out on penalties at the Abbey, despite twice coming back from behind. Final score was 2-2 and 4-2 on penalties.

FA Cup Replay

A well deserved draw at Macclesfield on Saturday gives Cambridge a home replay next Tuesday. The draw was achieved despite the continuation of the Cambridge penalty jinx, with two missed penalties, the first by Captain Andy Duncan and the second by player manager John Taylor. The winner of Tuesday’s tie will play away in the next round at Swansea.

CFU: Time Is Running Out

As the deadline approaches for the club’s loan to be paid the chairman Gary Harwood has warned that time is running out, if the repayment is not made by December 22nd, costs and penalties will make the debt even bigger. The good news is that supporters trust CFU have raised £30,000 toward the target of £100,000. There are many ways to help in the fundraising including the Sponsor A Seat project which allows seat sponsorship from £10 and is a popular stocking filler for Christmas, details at www.helpcfu.co.uk or phone the club (01223 566500). Last minute fundraising will take place in the End of Appeal party on December 21st, more details in next weeks Abbey Days.

On Saturday

This Saturday United are at home to Darlington. After a poor run of home performances this is a crucial game. Darlington are struggling near the bottom of the division and Cambridge need a home win to boost the confidence of the team and the attendance of home supporters.

CFU Fundraising - Bridge The Gap

Supporters group Cambridge Fans United have launched their latest fundraising scheme, Sponsor a Seat. This scheme allows fans to have their names put on a seat, this was tried successfully at Lincoln and is now available at The Abbey for only £10.

A good Christmas present for any U’s fan is the latest calendar. Only £6 unsigned or £10 signed by the players, available from the club shop or by post or over the phone.

For further details on how you can help the club Bridge The Gap in funding, there is a new website www.helpcfu.co.uk. The website has details about sponsoring a seat, buying a calendar and other details.

U’s 1 O’s 4

Cambridge manager John Taylor described himself as “absolutely devastated” after losing 4 -1 at home to Leyton Orient. In what must be one of the poorest United displays for many years the only positive signs were the promising skills shown by the two young strikers Brian Dutton, playing his first league game and John Turner who scored United’s only goal. Both these 18 year olds look certain to have a good future in league football.

FA Cup

United’s next match is an FA Cup tie away at Macclesfield. A good cup run would ease the financial pressures at the club and could be enough to bridge any shortfall in the funding. The U’s beat Macclesfield at home earlier in the season and our overall away form must give us a chance despite the recent poor results.
