United 0 Rochdale 0

Last Saturday saw United’s first home point of the year. United dominated the game against a Rochdale side who were clearly happy with a draw. This game was the U’s best chance for some time to turn around a truly awful home record. A win would have been achieved if only we could find a player who can score from the penalty spot, yes once again the U’s missed a penalty. Luke Gutteridge, who otherwise gave a fine display, became the fifth United player this season to miss a penalty. Why the Abbey crowd get so excited when we are awarded a penalty I do no know.

Taylor Says U’s Need a Cutting Edge

United boss John Taylor says “We need to find a cutting edge up front, we have been looking for a new player for some time and we will continue next week. We are not a team who are going to score lots of goals so we have to be hard to beat”.

On Saturday United welcome the other CUFC, Carlisle United. Carlisle are at the foot of their division and more importantly their away record is won one, drawn one, and lost twelve. What happens when the team with the worst home record in the division meet the team with the worst away record? Find out on Saturday at The Abbey, tickets available on the day.

Abbey Days

Tigers Beat United

On Saturday at Hull’s Kingston Communications stadium, Cambridge were defeated 2-0 by a high flying Hull City. Stuart Elliot scored both goals for the Tigers against a United team that was down to it’s bare bones, due to our two loan signings being unable to play against the club that loaned them to us. Sean Marshall and the defensive trio of Mark Venus, Warren Goodhind & Andy Duncan had a particularly good game against an expensively assembled Hull side. The only highlight for U’s fans was when formed United defender Marc Joseph scored in the dying minutes for Hull, only to have his celebrations cut short by a flag for offside. We U’s followers have to enjoy little pleasures at the moment.

Next at the Abbey

Cambridge take on another one of the divisions better sides on Saturday, when we face Huddersfield at the Abbey Stadium. Ticket details are available as usual from the club on 01223 566500 and will be available on the day. The club hope that the match will see the return of Daniel Chillingworth, Alex Revell and Shane Tudor, who are all returning from long term injury and also John Turner who missed the Hull game due to illness.

Abbey Days

Mixed Results Over Festive Period

United won just one point from two games over the festive period. In line with recent results the one point came in an away game, this time at Lincoln City. A poor performance in front of a large Boxing Day crowd at the Abbey saw the team lose 1-0 to local rivals Southend United. The U’s start the New Year in mid table 8 points from the play off positions and 9 points from the relegation zone, the next few weeks will be crucial in deciding which end of the table Cambridge fans will be watching at the end of the season.

Kitson sold to Reading

Cambridge’s top scorer Dave Kitson has been sold to 1st division promotion-chasers Reading. The fee is thought to be around £250,000. Many U’s fans will be sad to see him go, as Kitson has made quite an impression on the Division Three scoring charts since his arrival from non-league Arlesly Town two and a half years ago. There is some disquiet among fans as the sale came just a couple of days after the fans trust Cambridge Fans United raised £100,000 to support the club until the end of the season.

Next At The Abbey

The U’s are away next week but return to The Abbey on January 10th against promotion chasing Huddersfield Town.
