Yeovil 4 United 1

United’s superb away record has finally faded out. Just as we finally started to win some points at home and score a few goals the two good points of this season, away wins and a sound defence, have disappeared. Manager John Taylor described Saturday’s defeat against Yeovil as “ a horror show” he went on to say “"Some of the defending was Sunday class football, and if you're going to do that in the Third Division you're going to get punished All of a sudden, they step over the white line and play like schoolboys”.

Fans Director Elected

At the CFU 2004 AGM, held in the Supporters' Club on Monday 23rd February, Brian Attmore was announced as the winner of the ballot for the position of Fans' Director. Brian beat off competition from Justyn Medd and Jamie Dyer to become the first custodian of the Fans' directorship on the board of Cambridge United Football Club. Brian has been active in fans groups for some time, we are sure that he will make an excellent fans representative.

U’s Slip Down Table

After spending most of the season in a mid table position United have now joined a group of seven clubs within three points of the relegation zone. It is worrying that a couple of teams who were struggling for most of the season are putting together some good results. United are certainly suffering from the sale of former leading scorer Dave Kitson, the six matches played so far this year have resulted in only two goals.

Bury 1 United 0

A first minute goal by Bury was enough for them to take three points from last Saturday’s game, a good second half display by the U’s failed to produce a much needed goal. The only good sign to come out of the match was that the Bury keeper was voted Man of the Match, maybe a sign that our forwards are starting to be more effective.

New Loan Signing

Ipswich born Ashley Nicholls has joined United on loan until the end of the season. Ashley has made a good start by being voted Man of the Match after the bury game.

Next At The Abbey

On Saturday United are at home to Bristol Rovers. Rovers are just two points ahead of Cambridge.

Away Record Spoiled

United’s good away form, one of the best in the league, was seriously damaged by a 1-0 loss at strugglers Southend. A single goal by the Shrimpers always looked enough to win this match. The U’s forward line has been decimated by the sale of Dave Kitson and injuries to Dan Chillingworth and Alex Revell and the question on all the fans lips is ”Where will the goals come from?”

Looking For Number One

Cambridge United supporter and programme collector Martin Jordan is trying to trace a copy of the clubs first known home programme. It was produced in 1947 for Abbey United's home match against Rushden Town in the United Counties League on August 23rd. The match was played before a large crowd and saw the visitors run out 2-1 winners. Rushden Town went on later to become Rushden & Diamonds.

Having recently obtained the second oldest programme against Symington's Market Harborough (we understand this was a soup factory works team) he is hopeful that someone who was at the match or has been given the programme since will contact him on 01223 413210 or Martin@cfu-exchange.org.uk.

Next At The Abbey

The U’s are away at Bury on Saturday but return to The Abbey on Tuesday night when they play, the previously postponed game, against bottom of the table Carlisle United. Kick off at 7.45pm.

Wot No Football

Cambridge football fans were feeling disappointed at being unable to watch a game at The Abbey last Saturday due to a waterlogged pitch. This made a difference from the more usual feeling of being disappointed after watching a game at The Abbey on a Saturday. Possibly the luck is with the U’s at the moment as Carlisle, who were due to be United’s opponents, have won thirteen points out of their last seven games and despite being bottom of the table are now one of the divisions top form sides.

CFU Vote for a Fan's Director

After the success of Cambridge Fans United in raising over £100,000, CFU now have the chance to choose a fan to represent the supporters on the board of Cambridge United. Three names have been put forward, Brian Attmore, Jamie Dyer and Justyn Medd. All three have been active in setting up CFU and all played leading roles in fundraising over recent years.

Next At The Abbey

United are away this Saturday at local rivals Southend, the Saturday after they are at, the non local, Bury. They return to The Abbey on February 21st with a home game against Bristol Rovers.
