U’s 0 Grimsby 2
A woeful performance by the Cambridge team left them with a home defeat and just off the bottom of the table by goal difference. The United attack created few good chances and the Grimsby forwards caused the United defence enough problems to win the game. This was probably the worst performance of the season and may be blamed in part by the lack of five first team players due to injury. Manager Herve Renard said “We deserved to lose”.
England’s Number One?
United’s 17 year old keeper John Ruddy has been invited to train with the England under 19 team. If John is fit he will train with the squad as they prepare for their game at Carrow Road against Czech Republic on October 6th.
This Saturday
On Saturday the team travel to Kidderminster Harriers, the only team below them in the table. The Harriers, who are managed by Jan Molby, have struggled to win at home this season. Both sides will be desperate for success on Saturday to move away from the bottom of the league. The following Saturday United return to The Abbey where the visitors will be Bristol Rovers.

Two Away Wins In A Week
A successful week for The U’s started on Tuesday with a 2-1 win at Boston. Haverhill’s Stev Angus pounced on a header across goal, by 17 year old John Turner, to score the winning goal in the 89th minute. On Saturday John Turner was on form again setting up Dave Kitson for the first two goals in a 0-3 win at Cheltenham, another United youngster Lloyd Opara scored the final goal. Manager John Taylor described the performance at Cheltenham as outstanding. United are now eighth in the table.
Fans Forum
The next fans forum will be on Monday October 6th. The fans forum will be a chance for fans to question the manager, directors and officials about anything at the club. The evening will start off with a video from a recent away match, with expert commentary from John Taylor and Dale Brooks. The away game videos are planned to be a monthly feature at the club.
Next At The Abbey
United are at home on Saturday to Mansfield, who are immediately above them in the league. They are at home again, on the following Tuesday night, against Doncaster, kick of for Tuesday night is 7.45pm.

U’s 1 Gazza’s Boston 2
Another Saturday without a point for United. Paul Gascoigne played the full 90 minutes for Boston and although United had most of the play they missed their chances and payed the price in the 87th minute when a stunning McCann strike gave Boston the victory. Before that Jermaine Easter hit the woodwork, had two good chances saved and then scored with a rather fortunate deflected shot. Manager Herve Renard said “we have a lot of chance but we are not scoring many goals”.
New Midfielder Signed
Cambridge have signed former Cameroon under 21 midfielder Kingsley Mbome. Kingsley is now a French national and last played for GAP, although he has been on Sheffield United’s books previously. New signings are particularly important as Guttridge, Chillingworth, Tudor and Turner are all out due to injury.
Next At The Abbey
United entertain Mansfield at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday, tickets available on the day, or in advance from the club on 01223 566500. Mansfield are currently lying in 5th place in the table, but have only won once on their travels this season.
