Stats v. Kidderminster

United 1 Kidderminster 3

We bought two good bargains in the January sales, a pair of rose tinted spectacles (with extra strong tint) and a high power hearing aid. However, even while looking at the league table and remaining fixtures through our new spectacles we cannot see how United will avoid relegation. We need eight or nine wins to survive and we have just lost, at home, to a 10 man - next to bottom of the league! – Kidderminster side. I guess Saturday was the lowest point in United’s 93 year history and we haven’t got to the end of the season yet. Using our bargain high power hearing aid at The Abbey Stadium, during the quiet moments, I could faintly hear a fat lady clearing her throat and practicing her scales. Why didn’t I ask for “A Guide To Non-league Grounds” for Christmas?

Buy Back The Abbey

Fans trust CFU are forming a community stadium trust with the aim of buying back The Abbey Stadium to make it a centre for new community facilities and services, including being a ground for Cambridge United. They are asking for both donors and investors, they are offering up to a 5% return on loans of £1000. Go to www.cambridgefansunited.org for details.

Stats v. Yeovil

Yeovil 2 U’s 1

A good performance by The U’s, against an impressive Yeovil side, went unrewarded when Yeovil scored with a penalty just three minutes from the end. United fought back well after being a goal down, Shane Tudor equalised and it looked as if the team would come away with an unexpected point only to be disappointed in the final minutes.

Blair Aide Helps Stadium Appeal

Godric Smith, aide to Tony Blair and former Official Spokesperson for The Prime Minister has joined the Cambridge Fans United’s working group on buying back The Abbey Stadium. Godric is a lifelong U’s fan and lives in Cambridge. CFU are working with the City Council, supporters club and others to raise around £2million. They are looking for both donations and loans and have around £500,000 in pledges, so there is still a long way to go. Buying back the stadium will reduce running costs and help to ensure the long term future of Cambridge United. We will bring more news on this appeal in the coming weeks.

Next At The Abbey
On Saturday United are at home to fellow relegation favourites Kidderminster Harriers. Kidderminster have only drawn one match since August (against Cambridge) and United need to win this match to keep alive the slim hope of avoiding relegation. A draw is not enough for either side so expect some adventurous football.

Stats v. Chester

Three Games, Three Points.

Three draws in the last three games has given The U’s their best run for a long time. After two away draws United should really have beaten Chester on Saturday, they had the chances but failed to take them. Apart from a more solid looking United defence the only glimmer of hope is that Kidderminster and Rushden both lost. United are five points behind Rushden and safety but Rushden’s current form is only one point from four matches. With Shrewsbury showing improved results recently it is now a fight between United, Rushden and Kidderminster to see which one of the three can avoid dropping into the Conference.

Fund A Player?
Some United fans have started an appeal for supporters to raise funds to pay for a new player. The aim of the scheme is to raise as much money as possible by the end of this month, and sign a player in time for the key games that could save United from the drop. At least 200 people are needed to guarantee on average £20 per month, for the next few months. You can either donate a lump sum, or donate a regular sum over a period of months via a standing order with your bank. To contribute to the Player Fund, send your pledge to cufc-fund-a-player@hotmail.co.uk including your name, your contact details, and the amount you wish to donate

Stats v Bristol Rovers

A Glimmer Of Hope

A battling United performance on Saturday at Bristol Rovers brought a much needed point and gave the travelling fans some hope that the new manager Steve Thompson is starting to make a positive impact on the team. With John Turner and Danny Webb starting up front United were able to make chances and come close to winning. Simon Rea, signed on loan last week, was Man of the Match with a good defensive performance.

Points Needed

With 20 games left United could need another 30 points to be sure of avoiding relegation. However, if Rushden and Kidderminster continue their present form it may be possible to achieve safety with as little as 42 points, making the U’s target 22 points from 20 games. Notts County and Shrewsbury are several points clear of the relegation zone but have very poor recent form. Whatever happens it looks like being a nail biting few weeks for U’s fans.

Next At The Abbey

After three away games in a row United return to The Abbey on Saturday against a struggling Chester side. This is the type of opposition Cambridge need to win against if we are to turn this season around.

Gloomy Christmas

The ghost of Christmas present has visited The Abbey Stadium and has shown us that the future looks bleak. So often the crowded Christmas fixture list predicts the final months of the season, United fans must hope that any predictions are wrong. With no points from two home games and one away game, the team are now firmly bottom of the league and to make matters worse they are seven points from safety. New manager Steve Thompson has seen the club’s position deteriorate since he accepted the job, he has saved clubs from relegation in the past but must now face his toughest challenge, we need at least 30 points from the remaining 21 games. We have had only four wins this season, the last being in November, we now need at least eight wins between now May. Any hope for Cambridge must lie in finding someone who can score goals, can John Turner find the scoring touch or will it have to be yet another loanee? Only one team have really outclassed The U’s this season, top of the table Yeovil Town, so despite the gloom some hope still remains

Next At The Abbey

On Saturday United are away to mid-table Bristol Rovers, they return to The Abbey the following Saturday to play a struggling Chester side. Four points from these two matches will be needed to start the fightback as the following match is against the superb Yeovil Town.
