Two Wins Give Hope

After three months of trying, United recorded a win at home to Cheltenham and then followed it up by another win at home to Oxford. Cambridge are still six points behind Rushden, but the chance of a winning run has given the fans some hope.

Money Comes Rolling In

As the results improve so do the finances, first of all from Manchester United who have signed former United youngster Sylvan Ebanks-Blake which triggers a payment as part of the compensation package agreed when he left the U's at the age of 16. Then we had the news that keeper John Ruddy is likely to sign for Everton this week. Ruddy will continue to play for Cambridge United until the end of the season, but whenever possible he will spend two days a week training with Everton's goalkeeping coach Chris Woods before returning to train with United for the two days prior to a U's match.

There are now two away matches in a row, next Saturday at struggling Bury and the following Saturday against Orient. The Orient match is all ticket for Cambridge fans and only 500 tickets have been supplied to Cambridge due to building work at Brisbane Road.

Manager Steve Thompson declared “A win is imminent” and started with a new forward pairing of Dan Chillingworth and Danny Webb. Unfortunately the Cambridge jinx struck and Chillingworth limped off after just 20 minutes. This was a poor United performance, the team lacked inspiration apart from the last few minutes, and the “imminent win” is still imminent.

Off The Pitch

The bid for control of Cambridge United from Johnny Hon is still subject to further talks. CFU are still trying to raise funds to provide an alternative, bucket collections at matches and in the city centre are helping to increase funds. According to the board the club runs out of money at the end of the month so expect some news, good or bad in next week’s Abbey Days.

Calling All Football Supporters

CFU are inviting all football fans to the Abbey Stadium for Cambridge United’s match against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday 19th March. Fans from all over the country are being invited to attend the game in a bid to raise some funds for the cash strapped U’s as well as to show solidarity with other financially troubled clubs. Visiting fans are encouraged to wear their own colours, scarves etc.

Stats v. Macclesfield

United 0 Macclesfield 1

Saturday saw another home defeat for The U’s. The story was much the same as the rest of the season, United matching their opponents in everything but goalscoring ability. Macclesfield are on a good run which has brought them near to the promotion places but they didn’t outplay us and their manager Brian Horton said Cambridge were unlucky. A single goal just 10 minutes from the end was enough for The Silkmen to take the three points.

Relegation News

With both Kidderminster and Rushden losing on Saturday the position remains much the same but Cambridge now have one game less to make up the gap. With 14 games left United need to make up the points deficit. The only remaining hope is that Rushden continue their poor run of form and that The U’s can get close enough to them before they play each other in the penultimate game of the season at The Abbey on April 30th.

Next At The Abbey

Cambridge are away at Lincoln on Saturday but return to The Abbey on Tuesday 22nd to play Cheltenham. Both Lincoln and Cheltenham are fighting for a play off place so neither match will be easy.

Financial Crisis

At the end of November the board sold the ground and said the money would be used to pay of the debts and keep the club going for 26 months until the ground could be developed to bring in some income. At last week’s AGM the chairman told shareholders that a mistake had been made and the club would run out of money at the end of the month. We described last week as the lowest ever point for United supporters, but this week we learn that having sold our ground to ensure the club’s survival it may not survive anyway.

There are two possible knights in shining armour riding to the rescue, one is the fans trust CFU which has saved the club on a previous occasion but can they raise the half million pounds, that the board are demanding, in just a few weeks? The second possibility is one of the new directors Johnny Hon. Johnny seems to have half a million pounds spare and is willing to invest in the club, after he has a closer look at the club’s balance sheet. Representatives of CFU have met with Mr. Hon and have talked about the two sides co-operating.

On Saturday the team are at home to in form Macclesfield. The Silkmen need a win to get into the promotion places and a draw is no longer good enough for United.
