Only One Point Over Easter

A draw at Shrewsbury followed by a defeat at home to Southend brought little cheer to United fans. With Rushden also gaining only a single point, the Easter fixtures were a lost opportunity for Cambridge. The Shrewsbury game on Friday could have gone either way with both sides having chances. On Bank Holiday Monday the team struggled against a very good and in-form Southend side, in front of 6,700 supporters, the largest crowd of the season.

Cambridge are still six points adrift of Rushden and four points off Kidderminster. There are six remaining games, three home and three away to try to make up the points. The home games against Rochdale and Darlington will be difficult although the last game of the season against Notts County looks winnable. The away games at Swansea and Scunthorpe look very unlikely to provide any points which leaves the last away game at Rushden. If United can keep up with their relegation rivals until the last two games of the season, they will retain a slim hope of staying in the Football League.

Next At The Abbey

The team travel to Swansea on Saturday and return to The Abbey on Saturday week when they play Darlington.

Cambridge 1 Wycombe 0

Cambridge made it three home wins in a row on Saturday with a well fought performance against a good Wycombe team. The new front pairing of Ewan Roberts and Tes Bramble proved effective once again. Bramble opened the scoring with a 40 yard shot, this was probably the best goal seen at The Abbey for many years. The winning goal came from Roberts from a corner. If The U’s had signed Bramble and Roberts earlier in the season we certainly wouldn’t be in the relegation zone now.

Fans United Day

Saturday was Fans United day, Cambridge are the latest in a long list of clubs under threat of closure and fans of at least 79 other clubs turned out to show support for their fellow football supporters including supporters of several Scottish teams and fans wearing shirts from Spanish, Italian, French and German teams. The supporters trust CFU sold wristbands, shirts and fanzines to raise funds to help keep professional football in Cambridge.

Bank Holiday Football
The team will be playing at Shrewsbury on Good Friday and will return to The Abbey on Monday in a local derby against Southend, kick off 3pm.

The U’s 1 The O’s 1

The M11 derby last Saturday was a typical derby game, good support from the Cambridge fans and an end to end game. United had the best chances but failed to make anything out of them. A draw might have been good enough and most fans left to match in a fairly happy mood, only to discover that relegation rivals Rushden had scored a last minute winner. The U’s slim hopes are getting slimmer by the week.

Bramble Joins Cambridge

Tes Bramble has joined United on loan from Southend until the end of the season. The player who started his career at Cambridge City got off to a good start in the Orient game by scoring the equaliser.

Calling All Supporters

On Saturday The Abbey Stadium host a Fans United day. Supporters of all clubs are invited to join U’s fans in a show of support for clubs in danger of closing. Previous Fans United events have been organised by Brighton, Doncaster and most recently Wrexham when all of these clubs have been in dire financial positions. Such days have been a significant boost to these clubs and are one important reason why all are still in existence today. Kick off is at 3pm, wear your own team’s shirts and scarves.

A Lost Opportunity

With our relegation rivals Rushden playing second place Scunthorpe and The U’s playing a Bury side who had only won once since November, Saturday was a real opportunity for United to close the gap and put pressure on Rushden. Unfortunately this was just a normal Saturday for the team, not a bad performance and not a good result. Despite new signing Iwan Roberts scoring in his first appearance, Cambridge failed to make the most of their chances a finally lost the match to a last minute Bury goal. Rushden lost against Scunthorpe which leaves The U’s still six points away from safety with ten games to play. The real talking point from Saturday’s games is “if we can’t win against Bury where are we going to win any points?”

Next At The Abbey

This Saturday United travel to Leyton Orient. The away section of the Brisbane Road ground is all ticket and Cambridge have already sold their 500 seat allocation. The following Saturday the team return to The Abbey where they meet Wycombe Wanderers. This match will be a Fans United day with supporters representing many other clubs attending to show their support for CFU’s Save Our Club campaign.
