Local teams Cambridge United 84th, Colchester United 85th and the fairly local Ipswich 20th. Long Melford averaged 65 while feel some sympathy for Corby who averaged 19 and London APSA who had the smallest attendance at any match of 4.

RELEGATED!

After 35 years of league football Cambridge have been relegated to the Conference. A stunned silence greeted the end of no score draw against Rochdale on Saturday. Although we have seen this coming for some time, the ever optimistic supporters always hoped for a change of fortune, even up to the last second penalty appeal when Tess Bramble went down in the area, we believed that we might just survive.

New Directors

Better news this week was that two members of fans trust CFU have been appointed to the board. Nick Pomery is the new Finance Director and Justyn Medd is to be Commercial Director. Former Chairman Gary Harwood is standing down at the end of May. The existing directors have finally realised that they will be unable to keep the club going and they need to involve the fans. If only the board had taken this action before finding themselves in this crisis. We hope that Nick, Justyn and fans elected director Brian Attmore will be able to make sure Cambridge United continues to exist, but we are under no illusions about the difficulty they face.

On Saturday

This Saturday almost 2000 United fans will be making the trip to Rushden (Irthlingborough actually), this will be the last away league match for some time. If you want to come and show your support the match is all ticket and tickets are available from the club up to 5pm Friday.

A Very Bad Week

The situation at Cambridge United just seems to go from bad to worse. Saturday saw the club effectively relegated from the football league, now nine points behind Rushden with only three games left. A four – nil defeat at Scunthorpe confirmed what fans had expected for some time, we are just not good enough to climb out of the relegation zone.

Equally bad news was Johnny Hon’s announcement that he was resigning from the board. Hon had offered to lend the club £2.2m to buy back the ground and give £500,000 to keep the club going. There are rumours that Hon is still keen to work with CFU, the supporter’s trust, to help them in their fight to save the club. Relegation to the conference will reduce the club’s income at a time when they are already losing up to half a million a year. Johnny Hon is the only significant investor interested in the club and it is essential to keep him interested.

Next At The Abbey

With only two more league games at The Abbey, this Saturday United are playing Rochdale. Come along to join in the noise created by some very frustrated football fans and maybe even make some noise yourself.

United 3 Darlington 1

After going down on Saturday to an early Darlington goal the team fought back to a well deserved win with goals from Iwan Roberts, captain Andy Duncan and John Turner. With Rushden losing this brought Cambridge back to six points from safety. The strikeforce of Tess Bramble and Iwan Roberts is certainly the best we have seen at The Abbey since the sale of Dave Kitson but the opportunities to make up points are dwindling away. With a difficult game at promotion chasing Scunthorpe next Saturday we can only hope that Rushden and Kidderminster fail to pick up points.

Stadium Latest

A bid by director Johnny Hon to buy back the stadium for the club was refused by the ground’s new owner Bideawhile. The offer of £2.2million was £200,000 more than the ground was recently sold for. Fan’s trust CFU and CUFC directors had supported Hons proposals. Meanwhile the CUFC board has resurrected plans for a new stadium at a secret location. John Howard who is a director of CUFC and ground owners Bideawhile received continual abuse throughout the game against Darlington, this must have been the first time all three stands joined in singing and shouting.
