Plenty of Goals

After five games without a goal The U’s hit seven in the past week. First were three away goals against top of the table Grays Athletic, unfortunately Grays showed why they are top of the table by scoring five to take the points. There was better news on Saturday, when an inconsistent Altrincham side were defeated 4 –0. There is still no leading goalscorer emerging with several players on two goals.

U’s Text Service

The club are offering a mobile phone text alert service for all the U’s goals, team line ups and breaking news. For more information on how you can keep up to date with the games when you can’t be there go to www.cambridgeunited.com

Next At The Abbey

On Saturday The U’s are away at struggling Southport, this is another match for the team to test themselves against one of the lower sides in the Conference after having played many of the top sides at the start of the season. The following week United return to the Abbey for a Friday night game against Tamworth who are pleasingly nicknamed The Lambs. Tamworth had a good win in the first game of the season but haven’t won since.

Still No Goals

A 2 - 0 home defeat by Woking on Saturday prolonged United's run of games without scoring to five. Eight games into the season and our forwards have yet to score. Manager Rob Newman has urged supporters to help the players through their current crisis of confidence in front of goal by giving them encouragement. Woking had lost their previous four away games and The U's failure to beat them will cause serious concerns for the club's prospects for the remainder of the season. The statistics show that, yet again, Cambridge had most of the ball and most of the shots but of course none of the points.

LDV Draw

United remain in the LDV Trophy this season and have drawn Chester at home in the first round. Because of the LDV rules for including Conference clubs, Cambridge are in the Northern Section of the draw. The game will take place at The Abbey on Tuesday October 18th.

On Saturday United are at home again against fellow strugglers Altrincham. The Robins made a reasonable start to the season but have crashed to two succesive 5 - 0 defeats in their most recent matches.

Exeter 4 U’s 0

Exeter City made it three in a row, three matches against former league teams and three successive defeats. It is now seven games into the season and our strikers have yet to score. Manager Rob Newman has already let one non contract player go and is hoping to sign a couple more on short term contracts to see if they can solve our problem. Our next few games should give us some indicator of how the season will progress, apart from Grays they have not made good starts to the season.

Pinch To Blackburn Rovers

Club Secretary Andrew Pincher will be leaving The Abbey Stadium in order to accept an offer of the position of Football Secretary at Blackburn Rovers.
Pincher joined the Club in 1988 and became Secretary in October 1998. Chairman Roger Hunt said "For many years Andrew has been held in high regard by everyone he has dealt with in the football world and it was only a matter of time before he was made an offer that would be impossible for him to refuse. That said, he goes with mine and the Club's blessing.”

On Saturday United are at home to Woking. Woking are struggling on the same points as Cambridge, but they have conceded 13 goals in seven games which should give The U’s strikers a chance to impress.

Three Games, No Goals

With two games, against Kidderminster and Accrington, over the Bank Holiday weekend and a Friday night game against York City, The U’s had the chance to establish a good league position. Unfortunately, the opportunity was not taken. Despite dominating much of the play, the team could not win even a single point. This season is feeling uncannily like last season, no one is outplaying us but we just can’t score goals. It is now six games into the season and our forwards are yet to score, all our gaols have come from the midfield.

Finances

With the club still needing to increase it’s income to break even this season, a small boost has come with the granting of planning permission for car sales at the front of The Abbey Stadium, this is along with permission for a hand car wash on the Corona car park area. Remember that the club are still looking for matchday volunteers for many jobs at the stadium. www.cambridgefansunited.org.

Next At The Abbey

On Saturday the team travel all the way to Exeter for a difficult match against the second in the table club. They return the following Saturday against Woking.
