Canvey Island 1 United 1

A large Cambridge contingent braved the appalling Canvey weather to see their side win a useful away point. Manager Rob Newman again called on the strikers to put away their chances as it was left to defender Andy Duncan to score United’s single goal. Cambridge sit alongside Canvey in the middle of the table and it is easy to see Cambridge ending the season in exactly the same place unless Rob Newman finds a goalscorer.

Family Day This Saturday

Cambridge United have announced that the match against Scarborough on Saturday has been nominated as a Family game. The club are trying to encourage, as many under 16 year olds and their families to come as possible, and give them the opportunity to become involved in sport via their local football club. Match day tickets will cost £5.00 for adults and £1.00 for under 16’s anywhere in the ground including seating and terracing. The new South Stand is being made available for home supporters. Scarborough are below Cambridge in the table so the team will be hopeful of getting back to their winning streak. Kick off is at 3pm as usual.

U’s 0 Aldershot 2

United’s good run of results came to a crashing end with a 2 – 0 defeat by Aldershot Town at The Abbey. The Conference appears to have a very wide standard of performance; there are teams clearly good enough to play in League 2 and others who would not survive at that level. Cambridge seem to be in the middle, we perform well against the poorer teams but can’t take points of the better teams. On Saturday the team clearly missed suspended defender Mark Peters but manager Rob Newman put the emphasis on finding a new forward, he said after the game “We need a goal scorer”. I suppose that comment sums up the history of Cambridge since losing Dave Kitson to Reading.

Coming Up

The team are away at Canvey Island next week, this starts a run of games against some of the more local teams. Canvey is less than an hour from Haverhill and between now and the Christmas period travelling U’s won’t need to go any further than Dagenham and Redbridge or Stevenage.

Next At The Abbey

United are at home again on Saturday week (December 3rd) against former league side Scarborough.

Morecambe 0 Cambridge 1

The first away win of the season for The U’s. A David Bridges strike was enough to take 3 points for United and end Morecambe’s unbeaten home record. Cambridge started with four first team players left out of the side due to disciplinary action by manager Rob Newman. There was a surprising return for Ashley Nicholls after he finished his loan period at Rushden and an even more surprising performance as he was nominated as United’s Man of the Match.

Next At The Abbey

The team have two home matches in the next week. The first is on Saturday against mid-table Aldershot Town. Mark Peters will be suspended for this game after picking up 5 yellow cards, as will Danny Bunce after his sending off on Saturday. The next home game is on Tuesday in the LDV Northern Section against League One side Doncaster Rovers. Kick off is at 7.45pm.
The following Saturday United are away at Canvey Island. Canvey are one of the more local teams to Cambridge in this league and this fixture will gives U’s fans a chance to visit a new ground and have a day at the seaside.
