United and City in Merger Talks
At a recent meeting between United and Cambridge City to discuss co-operation, City raised the possibility of merging the two clubs. With both clubs in serious financial difficulty this may be the only way to secure the future of professional football in Cambridge. Understandably City fans fear that this move would see them lose their identity. United fans are more undecided with some seeing this as a way of keeping their club in business and others vowing not to support any new club. There are other possibilities short of merging such as sharing the ground and youth set up. The next year will be a critical time for all Cambridge football fans and whatever happens there will have to be some major changes. The natural emotions of football fans look like being stretched to the limit in the coming months.
Next At The Abbey
The team are home to Canvey Island on Saturday, the kick off is back to the usual 3pm. Don’t forget that on Monday (January 2nd) the team travels to our nearest rivals, Stevenage Borough. This match kicks off at 1pm and tickets are available on the gate.

A Week of Gloom
The last week or so has seen United lose a league game and then get knocked out of both the LDV quarter final and the F.A. Trophy. Just when you think it can’t get any worse the club then announced it was withdrawing its youth team from their league. What was once a highly successful youth set up is now finished. This is clearly a very short-term money saving move, which shows how desperate the clubs financial position is. With the reserves pulling out of their league last year and the youth team this year, how long will we have the first team for?
Michael Morrison
The highlight of Saturday’s defeat at Dorchester was Michael Morrison’s opening goal. This was Michael’s third goal of the season. Michael, from Haverhill, started in the youth squad at the age of 14 and worked his way through the reserves and into the first team. He has now established himself in the team at 17 years old.
Next At The Abbey
The traditional busy Christmas football programme has arrived. It kicks off on Boxing Day with a home tie against, our nearest Conference neighbours, Stevenage Borough. This match should attract a large crowd and it may be best to buy tickets in advance if you would like to sit in the main stand. Don’t forget that the game starts at midday.

Dagenham and Redbridge 1 United 0
On Saturday the team missed a chance to extend their recent good run of results. Dagenham had lost seven games in a row and an on-form United team would have been well placed to take points from this game. Unfortunately Saturday’s team gave a very much an off-form display with ‘keeper Scott Howie putting in the only performance worthy of praise.

United 2 Scarborough 1
A first league goal by Haverhill teenager Michael Morrison helped Cambridge to victory against a good Scarborough side. This was Michael’s sixth first team appearance as he seeks to establish himself as a regular in the team. Manager Rob Newman was disappointed with the overall team performance as he felt Scarborough were given too many chances in front of goal, but the three points were enough to take United into the top half of the table.
