United 2 Southport 2

Two goals by Robbie Simpson earned The U’s a point at The Abbey on Saturday. Although this takes United’s unbeaten run to five matches we stay just three points outside the relegation zone. Luckily, many of the other clubs near the foot of table have failed to win their games in hand. There has certainly been a marked improvement throughout the team, especially in attack, but moving on from draws to wins would calm a lot of United nerves.

March

This will really be a crunch month for the club. Out of the seven matches in March, five are against teams within a few points of United. St. Albans at home and Stafford Rangers and Altrincham away could help to decide the final table positions. The downside of a relatively easy March is a much more difficult run-in towards the end of the season, with the final game against the current bottom club Tamworth, being the only match that looks winnable.

The team are away on Saturday to Stafford Rangers, this is followed on Tuesday by the Altrincham match, they return to The Abbey the following Saturday for a difficult game against York City.

Morecambe 2 United 2

The U’s revival continued on Saturday with a draw against promotion chasing Morecambe. The team went ahead twice only for Morecambe to equalize with 8 minutes left. With two wins and two draws from the last 4 matches United are starting to look as if they may escape promotion. Shrimps' manager Sammy McIlroy said after the match "It was a great game of football, and Cambridge are nothing like the side we played at the Abbey earlier this year". The confidence is returning and the results are much improved. With the boardroom and the finances looking more stable we can now hope that the worst days are over for United fans. Or is this just wishful thinking?

Next At The Abbey

The team are at home on Saturday when the visitors will be Southport. This is the first of four matches in a row against teams fighting relegation. Eight points from these games will show that we are well placed to beat the drop, four points or less will bring the gloom back to The Abbey.

Cambridge 2 Grays 0

Two goals by Robbie Simpson gave United their second successive home victory and took the team out of the relegation zone. Two wins and a draw in the last three games should bring confidence to the players and supporters that Cambridge can beat the drop this season. None of the teams in the bottom half of the table can consider themselves really safe, The U’s main problem is that they are running out of games with other teams four, five and even six games in hand.

CFU AGM

Cambridge Fans United hold their AGM on February 19th at 7.30pm in the supporters club. Fans elected director Brian Attmore will be attending along with, manager Jimmy Quinn, chairman Lee Powers, and CFU sponsored players Josh Simpson and Michael Gash for a question and answer session. CFU will use this meeting as part of their consultation over changes to the club’s share ownership rules. If you are not a CFU member you will be able to join on the night.

The team travel to Morecambe this Saturday, they return the following Saturday for a match against fellow relegation battlers Southport.

Oxford U’s 1 Cambridge U’s 1

An improved performance from Cambridge brought them a point from second placed Oxford United. A goal by Andy Duncan put Cambridge ahead in the first half, a second half comeback by Oxford was not enough as Cambridge held on well, even when reduced to 10 men after Christian Smith was sent off. Manager Jimmy Quinn described the result as “tremendous”. Despite the point the league table remains as tight as ever. United are now third from bottom but seven teams are within 3 points of The U’s, although Cambridge have played more games than most.

AGM

After a lot of disappointment on the pitch, there was more to come at the AGM. Losses have been running at £20,000 per month and little or no progress has been made on buying back the ground from Bideawhile. To deal with this situation, long time supporter and director, Paul Barry has put forward a plan to make changes to the club’s share ownership. This plan includes abolishing the 20% ownership limit on any one shareholder. If this plan is accepted by shareholders, then Paul Barry, one of his colleagues and Johnny Hon will each make £200,000 investments in the club over the next three years.

Next At The Abbey

On Saturday the team are at home to Grays. Grays are now only one point above Cambridge.
